Uranium bioreduction using MBfR

In the membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), we deliver hydrogen gas (H2) to microorganisms by allowing it to diffuse through the walls of special membranes that prevent H2 bubbles from forming. The microbial community grows naturally as a biofilm on the outer wall of the membranes, by removing electrons from H2 and transferring the electrons to one or more oxidized contaminants in the water. Uranium Reduction Game

@Night of the open door, Biodesign Institute 2015

This project is inspired by uranium bioreduction project at SCEB, Biodesign Institute. It was creatd for kids to interact with concept of bioreduction. The game requires kids to throw bacteria balls to fibers in order to remove Uranium in the game. The animated graphics were projected on the wall to create an interactive environment for kids.

DNArt is a multidisciplinary project that is taking an inspiration from functional genomics to create a new type of graphic representation and artwork. DNArt mimics the way that genes encode the proteins that make each organism and species unique.

The Green Mission

2014

The Green Mission is a computer game that is built around the concept of bioremediation (the method using specific organisms to absorb and degrade toxic chemical from the environment).The idea of the game came from Plants vs. Zombies, but instead of having Zombies as the antagonis - the game has the mutated monsters that came from human waste as the enermies. This game won “Best Application Award” from CodeDay Corvallis in January, 2014.

Styrofoam Biodegradation

2010

The purpose of this study was to identify polystyrene foam biodegradable bacteria from landfill. The consortium of microbe was identify by 16s Ribosomal DNA. The results show that some bacterias are able to grow in the condition that polystyrene was the sole carbon source. Some traces of degradation were found on the surface of polystyrene foams compare to the control group.
